Buy Nothing New
We’re taking part in Buy Nothing New Day – and you can too!
On Friday 28 November, we’re taking part in Buy Nothing New Day, Reuse Network’s annual campaign that urges people to support their local reuse charities, coinciding with one of the biggest shopping days of the year, Black Friday.
Pop along to our community shop at 426 Marton Road in Middlesbrough and see what bargains you can find. We offer new and second hand household items as well as clothing and toys too.
Did you know?
According to a 2025 survey, over 22 million pieces of furniture are thrown away each year in the UK, and a quarter of UK adults replace a piece of their furniture at least once a year.
It takes around 1000X more CO2 to make a new piece of furniture compared to refurbishing an old piece.
Research by WRAP found that buying used could save households £2.37b, while avoiding 62,255 tonnes of carbon emissions (the equivalent of taking over 28,000 cars off the road for a year).
An ethical alternative to Black Friday
Now in its eighth year, Buy Nothing New Day shines a light on reuse and the charities making a difference to people, planet, and pocket.
In 2024, the reuse sector as a whole reused 2.55 million furniture and electrical items. Low-income households saved £321.2m by buying reused instead of new items, and 92,566 tonnes of CO2 emissions were saved.
Every day, reuse charities like ours are diverting household items from landfill and into the homes of people who need them, to help reduce poverty, tackle waste and offer a brighter and better future for the most isolated individuals in our society.
So, this Black Friday, why not make a stand for second-hand? Every purchase you make in our shops, helps to support this valuable work we do in our community.
What can I do on Buy Nothing New Day?
In the run up to Black Friday and Christmas, the pressure to consume new is at its highest, so we want to amplify the message of reuse for social and environmental change!
